Using The MEOWs Charts, Improving Outcomes & Saving Lives
Using Modified Early Obstetric Warning Score (MEOWs) charts helps medical staff identify the early signs of Sepsis.
The video presents real-life case showing how integrating the MEOWs chart into routine vital sign monitoring enabled midwifery and maternity teams to recognise subtle changes in patients’ condition, which triggered early escalation for assessment and treatment.
Healthcare professionals interviewed in the video highlighted three key priorities:
Routine and consistent use of MEOWs charts to detect physiological deterioration.
Clear escalation protocols when a trigger score is reached (e.g., notifying senior clinicians).
Rapid initiation of the FAST-M bundle of care.
One staff member noted that prior to implementing the MEOWs-guided system, deterioration was sometimes missed or observed late; now, early alerts are producing faster responses and more timely care. The video emphasises that while the tool is particularly used in maternity settings (where patients may deteriorate quickly and signs may be harder to discern), the model could be adapted more widely across hospital wards.
Preventing Maternal Sepsis and Saving Lives Worldwide
A proven, low-cost program improving the lives of mothers and their families.
Maternal sepsis is a leading cause of death during pregnancy and childbirth, particularly in low-resource countries. The Active Prevention and Treatment of Maternal Sepsis (APT-Sepsis) program has been shown to reduce serious infections and their consequences, supporting hospitals to improve maternal and newborn care.
